Monkton Community Growing Project

This is a project supported by individuals and some of the churches in the Monkton, Brodhagen and Logan areas. St. Peter's, Brodhagen, is committed to supporting this Canadian Foodgrains Bank project.  Some of the members of our congregation volunteer on the executive committee, provide land, crop inputs, time and energy for the project every year.

UPDATE 2008

Fast Facts:

Here are a few facts on what your donations can do:

• $20 fills 3 bags of wheat (50 kg each)
• $5 ships a bag of wheat from Canada to Africa
• $100 feeds a family of 5 for three month
• 1 tonne of grain feeds 2,500 people for a day
• Over 95% of the grain shipped reaches the intended destination
• Administration costs are less than 10%
• The proceeds from one market steer supplies enough tools and seeds to help 100 families plant a new crop (hoes, machetes, rakes, watering cans, beans, wheat, and rice seed)

Monkton Community Growing Project 2008 at a glance:

The Monkton Community Growing Project again had 2 plots in 2008. The Monkton North Project (Raszmann farm ~ 16 acres) was planted with corn which yielded 180 bushels per acre. The Monkton South Project (Campbell farm ~ 26 acres) was planted with soybeans and it yielded 55 bushels per acre. A dedication service was held at Monkton United Church on September 14th. We had a record year in 2008. Strong commodity prices and good weather helped the yields and our financial contribution to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. Our donation will be matched 4:1 by the Canadian Government, and will be available for food aid overseas. Thanks for your support.

This year we will be planting soybeans on the Raszmann farm (16 acres). The Monkton South Project will be at the Campbell Farm (east of Bornholm) where 22 acres of soybeans will be planted. We are always looking for a piece of land (20-25 acres) in the Broadhagen area and are paying competitive rent.
