Pastor's Message - January/February
What a year 2008 was for us in our 150th year in mission
to the people of Brodhagen and Logan! I need to extend my thanks, on
behalf of the whole congregation to those that took leadership roles
for our anniversary year. The 150th Committee organized, worked,
arranged, delegated and included many people and tasks for the whole
year long (and then some): The committee comprised Barb Scherbarth,
Laurene Regele, Richard Leonhardt, Deb Elligsen and
myself. Thank you. Then I would add a few more
people too – the confirmation reunion was a big task and was undertaken
by Rose Robinson, Carole Getke, Cheryl Ballie, Joan Beuermann, and Lisa
Ballie. And how could we forget the “twins” and the “Pretty
Woman” and “Mr. Lonely” (Betty Bennewies & Murray
Rose; Marj & John Moore - thank you) from the Life Skit
performed at the Olde Tyme Radio Show and those who spent a lot of time
and energy getting the skit and show together – thanks to Pauline
Beuermann, Dianne Rapien, Dorothy Elligsen & Nita
Leonhardt. One final mention would be Paul
Bennewies for his time in taking photographs at most of our anniversary
events - thank you. I know that there were so many more people involved
in all of the events, and to those not mentioned please accept our
gracious thanks also. What a year!
We have received all sorts of positive comments about our anniversary
year and events from our local community and around the Eastern Synod.
Some of the sentiments expressed have encouraged us to ‘keep the
momentum going’ in 2009. But I am not sure I agree.
To start with, everyone who worked so hard could use a break from the
time commitments and pressure of such a busy year. Also, it
would be very good for us to time away from our celebratory year, take
time to reflect on its success and also take time to reflect on what
was good and what bears repeating, or to reflect those earlier
sentiments, which parts of our celebratory year should we try to keep
the momentum going. But there is also the idea of
taking time to reflect on what God is calling us to next.
In Mark 6:46 we read that Jesus went up on the mountain to
pray. The mountain is not only a place were we can feel
closer to God, but it also that Jesus took time away from the busyness
of teaching disciples, healing and feeding the crowds. Time
away from the busy of 2008 could be our best approach to 2009 – time
away to pray and time to discern what God is calling us to next.
Peace – Pastor Steve
